Do you approach your quiet times with a sense of duty rather than delight? In this episode, Krystal discusses how to engage our curiosity as we open the Word of God with Kat Armstrong. Kat reminds us that studying God’s Word is about communing with the Lord, drawing near to Him in our time of need, and rejoicing in His great love for us as we read His story.    Kat’s love and excitement for God’s Word are contagious. If you are feeling like you have lost the spark in your Bible study, then you won’t want to miss all that Kat has to share in this episode!    The opinions of guests on the Daily Grace podcast do not represent the opinions of The Daily Grace Co., and we do not necessarily endorse the resources that they recommend or mention on the show. Loving Hard to Love People

Tuesday Mar 28, 2023

Tuesday Mar 28, 2023

In this episode, Shelby and Krystal talk about what it looks like to navigate relationships that we have with hard to love people. Rather than avoid every person that irritates or bothers us, how can we lean into the gospel and allow God's love to be reflected in the way we love and serve others?  As we chat through this topic, we will encourage you to remember how Christ loved us when we were "hard to love." We will look at Scripture to see how we can practically love hard to love people even when it feels impossible. And we will remember that we are dependent on the Spirit to help us love others with the love of Christ. This week Krystal chats with Esther Smith about her book, “A Still and Quiet Mind.” In Esther’s book, she details several strategies for combating a variety of unwanted or intrusive thought patterns. Some of these strategies are simple yet effective, such as slowing down and taking deep breaths. Other strategies include biblical meditation as we reflect on the truths of God and His Word. Ultimately, these strategies remind us of our limited nature and help us to fix our eyes on our wonderful Creator. We pray this conversation provides practical tools while remembering the mighty God that we serve.   Sign up for the Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.”   Time Stamps: 3:00 - Why Esther wrote a book on intrusive thoughts 5:12 - Thinking about unwanted thoughts in a holistic and biblical way 7:52 - Reasons Christians get stuck in the process of changing their thoughts 9:39 - Practical tips for changing unwanted thoughts 10:59 - How to start changing your unwanted thoughts today 14:06 - How our bodies, stories, relationships, and spiritual lives impact changing our unwanted thoughts 17:29 - How to use biblical meditation to change unwanted thoughts 24:03 - How to change unwanted thoughts connected to trauma 29:42 - How to know when unwanted thoughts become intrusive thoughts 32:55 - What the gospel has changed for Esther   Resources mentioned in this episode:  A Still and Quiet Mind: Twelve Strategies for Changing Unwanted Thoughts The Whole Life Book   Connect with Esther: WebsiteA Still and Quiet Mind: Twelve Strategies for Changing Unwanted Thoughts by Esther Smith Instagram   Connect with us: Subscribe to Daily Grace: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and click subscribe.  On Android, click this podcast RSS feed link and choose your podcast app.  If needed, you can copy this link directly into your favorite podcast app (like Stitcher or Overcast). Have you ever walked through something so dark and difficult that it made you wonder where God was and why He didn’t intervene? Our guest today, Nicole Jacobsmeyer, has! Today’s episode was all about how the gospel helps us to make peace with our past. Our pasts hold a lot for each of us—good memories, sad seasons, hard times, and everything in between. The way we view our past has implications for us in the present and for our future. It can hinder us or help us in our spiritual growth. It can even dictate how you respond to others in times of stress. In this conversation, we talk about the power of the gospel to help us make peace with our past. Since this episode releases on Valentine’s Day, we decided to do something extra special! We have not one but TWO interviews in this special episode! First, we talk with our husbands to discuss what it looks like to honor God and one another in marriage as we navigate unmet expectations. Then, we interviewed Melissa Zaldivar about expectations in singleness. I know the temptation is to listen to the part that applies to where you are at, but I encourage you to listen to both parts! Chances are if you are single, you have a married friend. If you are married, you likely have a single friend. (If you don’t, step out of your comfort zone and develop new friendships—you won’t regret it!) There is so much biblical wisdom in this episode that will help you to be a better friend and hopefully a more devoted follower of Christ. “We tell the stories of Scripture over and over because they anchor us and remind us of what's true when things get blurry.”  This is a quote from Melissa Zaldivar’s book titled, “What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart.” We loved talking with Melissa on this week’s episode as we discussed grief and loss. In her book, Melissa tells the story of losing her friend Jill to cancer as she weaves together threads of the life of Louisa May Alcott, the author of “Little Women.” It is a beautiful, hopeful, and heavy story of how Jesus can meet us in whatever situation we find ourselves in. In today’s conversation, we talk about how to rightly handle the Scriptures when faced with loss, how to help others that are in grief, and where hope is found even as grief lingers. You may be experiencing a season of loss or you may be walking with someone who is in tremendous grief. Wherever you find yourself today, be encouraged by the truths of Scripture and the hope found in the gospel. Jesus will hold you together, just as He holds all things together (Colossians 1:17).   Sign up for the Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.”   Time Stamps: 0:56 - About Melissa2:43 - Favorite things4:07 - Melissa’s story of grief and loss7:25 - What it was like writing on grief as she was walking through it10:10 - Rightly handling Scripture in the midst of grief15:22 - How grief surprised Melissa18:13 - Encouragement for those who are grieving20:16 - Encouragement for those walking alongside someone who is grieving23:37 - What the gospel has changed for Melissa   Resources mentioned in this episode:  What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart Gospel Hope in Grief and Loss Scripture for Grief Card Set Between Grief and Glory: Lamentations Study   Access the What Cannot Be Lost Audiobook for Free: https://one-audiobooks.oneaudiobooks.app/what_cannot_be_lost_free   Connect with us: Subscribe to Daily Grace: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and click subscribe.  On Android, click this podcast RSS feed link and choose your podcast app.  If needed, you can copy this link directly into your favorite podcast app (like Stitcher or Overcast). We might try to avoid it but it’s inevitable—we all fail at something at some point. No matter if we are in the workforce, self-employed, at home, or in ministry, we face failure. But we will have moments of success as well, which in some ways can be even more difficult to handle. Navigating both of those with grace can be a challenge in different ways! How can we respond well as believers? In today’s conversation, Shelby and I invited staff writer Katie Davidson to join us as we talk about how to navigate success and failure. If you struggle to receive success with humility or failure with grace, we encourage you to join us in this conversation. We hope that it will provide you with some practical and Biblical wisdom to rightly navigate these situations in your everyday life.
