It’s the holidays! Twinkle lights are everywhere. You’re thinking about gifts and holiday outings. You log onto social media and see a ton of gift guides. You see perfectly curated photos of families at pumpkin patches and Christmas tree farms. Suddenly, you feel something: you feel discontentment. Discontentment can be a struggle any time of the year, but it definitely can be magnified during the holiday season. And what we have found is that social media adds fuel to the flame. In the past, we could only see what people were buying or doing in our local vacinities. Now, we can see what tens of thousands of people are buying and doing around the entire world! If we’re not careful, we’ll not only be consumed with discontentment, but we could even miss out on the true reason for the season: Jesus. It’s easy to look to other things to feel the hype of the season. This is true even for believers! So we want to ask: how can we combat discontentment, engage wisely on social media, and ultimately, magnify the true meaning of Christmas both online and offline? Come join our conversation! Holidays conjure up a lot of feelings. (5:44) Discontentment can be fueled by social media by putting an: Emphasis on material possessions (8:15) Emphasis on the experience of the holidays (9:57) Emphasis on perfection (11:16) Discontentment can be sneaky. Your theology matters. Jesus has called you to be a doer of His Word, not just a hearer. This requires us to have a “head knowledge” in order to know what Jesus has called us to do, but it doesn’t stop there. We need this knowledge to sink into our hearts in order to change us and impact how we live. This is how our theology fuels our doxology, or our worship of God in our everyday lives! If we’re parents or around children, this impacts how we talk and teach and relate to them, too! We are joined by Amy Gannett. Amy is a Bible teacher, a writer, a speaker, a church planter’s wife, the owner and creator of Tiny Theologians, and the author of “Fix Your Eyes: How Theology Shapes Our Worship”. In this conversation, she helps us dig deeper into this idea of how our theology impacts our everyday lives. She talks to us about how to safeguard against this tendency to just learn things about God and His Word (head knowledge) without it changing our lives (and our hearts). She talks to us about how we can explain theology in a way that kids can grasp, too. It’s a rich conversation you don’t want to miss! Be sure to follow Amy on IG at @amycategannett and @tinytheologians and check out her website: https://amygannett.com Here are some questions that Amy answers in this interview: Does theology matter for the average Christian? Why? (7:13) Jesus talks about being doers of the word and not just hearers. Why do we have such a tendency to be hearers only? (15:57) How do we safeguard against a joyless head knowledge when we learn things about God and His Word? How do we allow theology to shape our lives? (19:35) Can you give us an example of a theological doctrine we might learn about and how it can impact our daily lives and lead us to worship? (25:42) For those of us who have kids or teach children, how much are they ready for? Are there certain concepts/doctrines we should focus on? (36:48) What are some practical ways we can help our kids understand the purpose behind theology and go actually apply it to their lives? Be grateful. Do not grumble. We know this. Yet, many of us struggle. Many of us would say that gratitude doesn’t come naturally to us. Not all the time, anyway. Too often, we find ourselves wrestling with ingratitude. We find ourselves grumbling. But when we grumble, what’s really going on? More often than not, there’s a lot going on inside of our hearts. Maybe it’s discontentment; comparison; envy; jealousy; self-hatred. These deep heart issues seep out into our thoughts and in our words--we grumble. In this episode, we talk about what grumbling reveals about our hearts. We talk about how the gospel confronts our grumbling, and how we can be people of gratitude. What does gratitude look like? (5:43) What is grumbling? (9:13) What’s going on in our hearts when we grumble? Shame is hard. Shame around sex and sexuality is really hard. Some of us feel shame from our own sexual sin. Others of us feel shame from others who have sinned against us sexually. Some of us grew up in Christian households that didn’t handle the topic of sex and sexuality well so we’ve experienced shame about sex even within the context of marriage. This is all hard. How do we develop a biblical view of sex and sexuality? How can we find healing and hope? Today, we’re joined by Shalee Lehning. Shalee works on staff at Harvest USA, which is a biblically-based organization that works to help people of all different ages and backgrounds who deal with gender and sexuality issues. Shalee co-wrote a book with Ellen Dykas called “Sexual Faithfulness: Gospel-Infused, Practical Discipleship for Women”. There’s also a FREE course on this topic with guides for leaders and participants. You can find all of this at harvestusa.org. Be sure to follow Harvest USA on Instagram (@harvestusa) for more helpful content. Here are some questions we covered in this interview: What is shame? (6:16) Why is sex and sexuality in particular an area that is often surrounded by a lot of shame? (7:47) What is sex supposed to be like according to God’s design? (11:42) One reason for shame surrounding sex is because of past or present sexual sin. How should we respond to this kind of shame? (15:57) Many people believe that if they sinned sexually that they are “damaged goods,” “unforgivable,” “undesirable,” etc. How would you respond to these ideas? (21:48) What encouragement or advice would you give to the person who has been violated sexually in some way and is struggling with shame? (26:19) A lot of believers who grew up in Christian circles struggle with shame surrounding sex even in the context of a monogamous, Christian marriage. Maybe it feels scary, dirty, or wrong. Why do you think that is? (30:46) How can someone who is experiencing this kind of sexual brokenness within their marriage find healing? (37:47) Maybe for someone listening, it is their spouse that is struggling with this kind of shame. How can a wife support her husband or a husband support his wife through these struggles, and how can they address their own insecurities that may arise from feeling unwanted or at fault for their spouse’s struggles. (40:17) For those of us who have some kind of influence over kids (parents, teachers, sunday school volunteers, aunts and uncles, etc.), how can we approach the topic of sex in a way that helps them grow up with a healthy view of sex according to God’s design? Stories are powerful. We crave stories. They move us and impact us. Isn’t it interesting how God communicates His plan of redemption through the STORY of Scripture? He is the master Storyteller! And as His image bearers, we are also storytellers. We each have a story. Yet, many of us don’t know how to communicate our stories to others. We don’t realize how our stories can impact how we share the gospel and disciple others. Some of us think our stories are boring; our testimonies seem to be void of drama. Others of us think our stories are too hard and may even discredit us from talking about God with others. But the truth is, all of our stories matter. We can craft and share our personal stories to the glory of God! In this conversation, we are joined by Kyra Riley Daniels, and she helps us work through the topic of personal stories and storytelling. Kyra is a staff writer at The Daily Grace Co., but along with her degree in theology from Westminster, she has a degree in theater from Yale University. Here are some questions we work through in this interview: Why are stories powerful? (11:13) Each of us has a story; we’re storytellers. How does this impact how we share the gospel and even disciple others? (15:33) Some believers may think, “Nothing dramatic has happened in my life. My testimony is boring.” Why do these stories matter? What do these stories tell us about God? (20:03) Others may think, “My story is full of really hard things.” Maybe some of us feel like our personal stories discredit us from talking about God or from sharing the gospel. Why do these stories matter? What do these stories tell us about God? (24:40) How can we craft our own personal stories to the glory of God? What practical tips do you have for us to develop our personal testimony in order to share the gospel? (29:12) How can we, as ordinary people, grow in the art of storytelling in order to further the kingdom of God? (32:41) Resources mentioned in this episode: Dr. Dan B. Can people really change? From little quirks to deep-seated issues, we’re asking the question that many of us may have asked in secret: is it possible for someone to truly change? Maybe we’ve asked it of ourselves. We keep doing the same thing (that we don’t want to do), over and over again. We may think to ourselves, “I’m not sure if I can ever grow out of that and change for the better.” It’s easy to feel frustrated with ourselves and with those around us. The gospel answers this question directly. The gospel is the good news that through the person and work of Jesus Christ, children of wrath are transformed to become children of God. This regeneration is the ultimate change. It’s hearts of stone being changed to hearts of flesh. It’s the spiritually dead becoming spiritually alive. But what happens afterward? Why do we, believers, still ask this question of ourselves and those around us? We worked through this question and topic in this week’s episode. Come join us! The big question: “Can people really change?” Change is possible, but sanctification is slow. True heart change is only possible if you’re in Christ. Sin is powerful. We can’t change on our own, but what can we do? Preach the gospel to yourself and others. Combat forgetfulness by cultivating this intimacy with Jesus. Surrender your sin struggles to the Lord. Release your grip on willpower. Partnering with the Spirit in the work of sanctification. Remember common grace. Walk by the Spirit daily. Lean into community. How do we engage with others on this journey? Extend grace. Surrender your personal desires for that person. Hold fast to hope for them. Speak truth over them and encourage them. Pray for them! You are forming habits all the time, whether passively or actively. So in a way, your life is a compilation of your habits. The question is: what kind of habits are we forming? And can we actually form habits that fortify our faith and help us grow in Christlikeness? Many of us hear the word “habit”, and we apply the concept to things like working out or washing our faces before bed. Or maybe we primarily think of “bad” habits, like the habit of biting your nails when you’re bored or anxious; the habit of reaching for your phone when you’re waiting in line; or the habit of binge eating sweets when you’re stressed. But can “good” habits be cultivated with the aim of growing our faith? Why should this idea of habits be related to spiritual things at all? Habits mean automation. It means we don’t have to invest as much energy and thought into doing something. When we put it that way, we can easily see how habits can be beneficial for our spiritual lives. Think about it: when you cultivate the habit of remembering God’s faithfulness, you’re going to find yourself calling that truth to mind when your life circumstances want to convince you that God has forsaken you. When you cultivate the habit of trusting in God to provide, you’re going to refrain from despairing when you hit a rough patch. So what can we practically do to form these habits of faith? Today, we are joined by Jen Pollock Michel. Jen wrote the book A Habit Called Faith. Jen helps us see how habits impact our lives, and she offers practical advice so that we can form good habits that can help us grow in godliness. You can find Jen on Instagram at @jenpmichel and at her website (click here). Here are some questions we work through in this episode: What impact do habits have on our lives in general? (3:34) How might the impact of forming habits carry over into growing in faith? (5:57) What are some habits that believers can form to help us grow in Christlikeness? (8:50) What are some practical things we can do to start forming these habits in our lives? (13:08) What are some bad habits that might inhibit our growth, and how can we break them? (20:07) Why is the habit of Bible study particularly important for our faith? (28:49) How can we work toward building a Bible study habit when we don’t feel motivated? Raise your hand if you skip genealogies in your Bible reading! We get it. These hard-to-pronounce names are just hard. We are tempted to skim past them. We know they’re important because God, in His infinite wisdom, included them, but we’re not sure why. To put it simply, genealogies trace God’s faithfulness and promises throughout history. Each name tells us something about God! And if we look closely, we’ll see that a few women are included, too. In today’s episode, we dive into the story of each of these women. These stories teach us a lot about God, but we pull 5 truths about God beautifully shown in and through these women’s stories. These can seem like simple truths that we know, but when we see them played out in these women’s lives, they sink in. They stir our affections for our great God! God is faithful to fulfill His promises. (12:44) God is sovereign. (31:56) God loves His enemies. (45:10) God sets His love and extends His promises to people to all tribes, nations, and tongues. (49:21) God hates sin but loves redemption. (53:41) This year, the Advent study from The Daily Grace Co. is called Waiting for a Savior. As we follow the Advent calendar, we trace the lineage of Jesus throughout Scripture. We see that God’s plan of redemption came through a long line of imperfect, sinful people, to bring forth a perfect, sinless Savior. Jesus’ family tree points us to the hope of our salvation that every kind of person with every kind of story is invited to belong. We’ve all heard the phrase “forgive and forget”. It’s a nice principle, right? When we wrong someone and seek forgiveness, we would also really like it if that person completely forgot about the offense. But when we turn the situation around, we’re not so sure. Especially if it’s a deep wound and we feel all the things, extending forgiveness is hard. Forgetting the offense entirely seems to be near impossible. So in this episode, we explore this idea of forgiving and forgetting. In the Bible, we read verses that say God will be merciful and “remember their sins no more”. What do we make of this, especially since we also know that God knows all things? We talked about why we should forgive in a previous episode, but today, we want to explore this idea of forgiving and forgetting. We talk about if it’s even possible to truly forgive and forget. And is it wise to forgive and forget? Is this something Scripture calls us to? Does God actually forget when He forgives? That’s the bottomline: we want to forgive as Jesus forgives. He is our model! Jesus is our model for forgiveness. (7:42) When God forgives us our sins, does He forget them? (8:53) How can we forgive and continue to walk forward in that forgiveness? (16:03) Jesus is our model: He is committed to those He forgives. (18:58) How do we remain committed to those we’ve forgiven? (23:10) Caveat: we need wisdom! Abusive and/or toxic relationships are real. (25:27) We have certain “covenant relationships” where forgiveness is vital. (30:58) How do we do “not call the offense to mind” when the sin is painful? (35:11) How many times should we forgive? (44:04) This feels impossible. How do we do any of this? (49:37) Resources mentioned in this episode: The Theology Handbook by The Daily Grace Co. There is a collective weariness that we’re facing right now. Do you feel it? The world, at large, has been facing some particularly devastating blows. Our personal lives are undoubtedly littered with things that are worth grieving. We are so tired; we deeply long for rest. The question is, where are we turning? In today’s episode, we are joined by Emily Lex. Emily is an artist and the author of Freely & Lightly: God’s Gracious Invitation to a Life of Quiet Confidence. This is a book for those that are worn out. Worn out from the heaviness of our broken world but also from the search for personal significance. In response to this weariness, Emily invites us to look into God’s Word and see Jesus’s invitation to find true rest. We work through these questions: Why are so many of us constantly tired or weary? (5:17) Why aren’t our go-to solutions to remedy our weariness working? (10:42) How is true rest in Christ different from the rest the world offers? (13:28) How does an understanding of God’s character help us find true rest? (15:22) What does it mean that “real rest requires an undoing”? (21:03) What rhythms can we incorporate into our lives to find real rest? (23:35) What if life is just too busy or stressful to experience rest? (26:21) What first steps can we take to pursue real rest?
