Stress. We all experience it because our world is full of stressors. Even though God has designed our bodies to respond to stressors in a way that keeps us safe, we don’t always handle stress in a way that is healthy. Is there a way for believers to manage stress in a God-honoring, gospel-magnifying way? What are some practical things we can do to handle stress peacefully? The Bible offers us principles for dealing with stress. We can have peace in the midst of the pressures of this world! “Do not bear false witness against your neighbor” (9th commandment). What does that even mean? Are we good if we just don’t spread lies about our neighbors? Are the 10 commandments something we even need to pay attention to on this side of the cross? Jen Wilkin helps us understand the purpose behind the law, and how we should view it today. She expounds on the 9th commandment, and we may be surprised at what all it entails. In fact, we may be shocked to realize it’s a besetting sin in our lives! Heartbreak, deep pain, suffering. We’ve all grieved the brokenness of this world. Yet, some of us wish we knew how to grieve effectively and with hope. As believers, we know we are not exempt from suffering and grief, but if we’re honest, sometimes we have a hard time reconciling our pain and the goodness and sovereignty of God. Can we grieve and trust God? Can we struggle and believe? Can we mourn and rejoice? Yes, we can, and it’s through the practice of lament! Change is inevitable. It takes on many forms, and responses to change can vary from person to person and situation to situation. Our world says to be adaptable, have the right perspective, and be positive in light of change. While these are constructive character traits to have, we believe that there’s more to it. In our ever changing world, we can find true rest and comfort in who God is. The truth that He is unchanging enables us to rightly handle whatever changes we may face! Life can feel out of control sometimes, and in response, we can find ourselves trying to control whatever we can. We feel a need to be in control! But is that even possible? We can plan out our days down to the hour, but there are a million things that can happen to completely uproot us. In essence, the world is out of our control! But one thing is sure: it is not out of God’s control. He is sovereign, and resting in this attribute of God frees us from our search for control. You know the desires of your heart. We all have desires! We are, by God’s design, longing creatures. But we also know that our desires are often distorted and self-centered. We desire the wrong things or we elevate good things to become ultimate things. We find that our desires become idols! So how do we go about this? How do we desire as God intended for us to desire? How do we win in this constant battle of our affections?
