Words are important. We use words to engage with others, so we want to be mindful of the power of words and their tremendous effects. Abbey Wedgeworth joins us today and guides us through this discussion. She offers wisdom, biblical truth, and a lot of practical advice on how we can wisely choose our words when we’re specifically speaking to children. This conversation is not just for parents! Many of us interact with kids in ministry, in our own extended families, or in our neighborhoods. Abide. We use it as our “word of the year”. We see it on coffee mugs, necklaces and baseball caps. But what does abiding really mean? How do we abide? What does it look like to abide in the Lord in this day and age? We are joined by Kristin Schmucker, and she helps us see how abiding is simply being a disciple. It’s not about trying harder out of our own strength, but trusting in the person and work of Christ. It’s an overflow of our position in Christ as His beloved. It’s a means to true rest. Does comparison always lead to envy and competition? Is it really “the thief of joy”? Scripture offers us a different form of comparison: imitation. We are called to imitate those who imitate Christ. This is a positive form of comparison that helps us in our pursuit of godliness. It isn’t about getting validation. It is acknowledging our weaknesses, identifying believers who are strong in those areas, and learning from them in order to grow in Christlikeness. The goal is more of Christ and His glory. We know we should pray. We want a thriving prayer life. But where do we start? What do we say? Our prayer lives feel rote and dry! We wish someone would teach us to pray. Good news! Jesus gave us the model to experience an enriching prayer life in Scripture! The Lord’s prayer has 6 petitions (3 God-centered petitions followed by 3 need-centered petitions), and these can serve as a framework for our prayers. Prayer is an important spiritual discipline to intimately commune with God! Our world is diverse. People come from different cultures, are shaped by different experiences, and have different preferences and passions. Even within the body of Christ, there are a wide range of personalities! While differences can be good, they can also create tension that can give way to conflict/division. Kristie Anyabwile joins us today and offers us practical advice as to how we can embrace our differences, navigate the tension that can arise from our differences, and actually learn from those in the body who are different from us. Do you live for the weekend? Or the next vacation? For most of us, our days are ordinary and filled with monotonous, everyday things. We can feel weary, unfulfilled, overwhelmed, or stressed because of the mundane things that fill up our days. We are tempted to go into auto-pilot. But how does the gospel inform the way we approach the mundane things of life like paying the bills, doing homework, cleaning the house, and changing diapers? We believe that in Christ, we can experience fullness of joy. On today’s episode, we talk about the times in our spiritual lives where we feel like we’re in a drought. Maybe God’s presence feels withdrawn. Maybe we don’t find delight in reading and studying His Word. Maybe we don’t feel passionate about God and the things of God like we once did. We may wonder: why do we experience these times of spiritual dryness? Is it an indicator of a lack of faith or is it something all believers go through at some point on their faith journeys? Today, we talk all about spiritual dryness. We discuss the various reasons we can experience these seasons, and how we can faithfully walk through them. On today’s bonus episode, we get really practical. In Episode 67, we discussed what burn out is and offered preventative measures to avoid burnout. However, we realize that many of us are currently in a state of burnout! So then the question is: what practical steps can we take to overcome this state of chronic stress? In this short bonus episode, we discuss how incorporating rhythms of confession is important for all of us. If we’re in a state of burnout, we need to start by confessing that we’ve been living out of our own strength! Then we can take practical steps to respect God’s good limits for us. We need to intentionally yield to God’s design of tending to our physical needs, which means we need to consider the very real aspects of diet, exercise, and sleep. We pray this episode and its practical content is helpful to those currently in burnout. Disclaimer: many symptoms of burnout mimic symptoms related to anxiety and depression. It is important to note that clinical anxiety and depression are not synonymous to burnout. Please consult a biblical counselor in your area for additional help, if needed. On today’s episode, we talk about burnout. This is something that many of us have faced, are facing, or dread we will face in the future. Burnout is a state of chronic stress. It can be described as feeling exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, spent, and just plain done. It can come up in many different ways and in many different contexts, and it’s something any personality type can experience. But here’s the thing: our theology has direct implications to how we navigate this issue of burnout. In this episode, we explore what Scripture says about who God is and who we are in light of Him, and we discuss how those truths impact how we live. Believers don’t have to live in a state of burnout! We can go to God’s Word and see how He has designed His people to live on this side of glory. The Bible helps us live this Christian life by helping us establish a good pace; offering true nourishment; building endurance; and leading to true rest. We can prevent burnout and finish our race well. Come join our conversation!
